What is Pilates?

Pilates is a system of exercises that was developed to re-habilitate injuries.

Mat Pilates is originally based on 34 floor exercises – which you can view here

Pilates is well known for being good for posture and core strength.

Pilates was developed by Joseph Pilates in the early part of the 20th century to primarily rehabilitate injured soldiers after WW1.

When Joseph Pilates emigrated to the USA it became widespread and popular over time, finding a place alongside yoga as a mainstream form of low impact exercise.

Pilates is a foundational style of training – meaning that it is an ideal base for rehabilitation and other more strenuous activities.

The safe and controlled nature of its movements also make Pilates safe and effective for improving muscular issues that cause back pain.

Pilates is also a good route from being sedentary into a more active lifestyle due to its emphasis on safety and form.

What are the Pilates machines used for?

Pilates can use a number of machines including the cadillac, reformer, Tower, Chair barrel box and arcs – but most typically the reformer.

These machines come into their own for specialist rehabilitation where a client cannot stand properly, and for more specialist flexibility training for dancers.

I don’t personally use machines as accessibilty is as with some creativity and ingenuity most functions of the machines can be recreated through Mat Pilates – which a client can then practice on their own without expensive equipment.
