What is Autism?
Autism, also known as autism spectrum disorder (ASD), is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects how a person perceives and interacts with the world. It is characterized by persistent challenges in social communication and interaction, as well as restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, or activities.
Individuals with autism may have difficulties with verbal and nonverbal communication, such as understanding and using language, maintaining eye contact, and interpreting social cues. They may also struggle with social interactions, finding it challenging to establish and maintain relationships with others. Additionally, people with autism may engage in repetitive behaviors or have highly focused interests.
The exact cause of autism is unknown, but research suggests that a combination of genetic and environmental factors may play a role in its development. It is typically diagnosed in early childhood, often around the age of two or three, although some individuals may receive a diagnosis later in life.
While there is currently no known cure for autism, early intervention and various therapies can help individuals with autism improve their communication skills, social interactions, and overall quality of life. It’s important to approach autism with understanding, acceptance, and support to create an inclusive and accommodating environment for individuals on the spectrum.
